An inertial measurement unit is a sensor module with three gyroscopes and three accelerometers mounted on perpendicular axes. It measures angular rate and linear acceleration in three dimensions. An IMU reports raw motion; it does not compute position or orientation by itself. That is done by an AHRS or an INS built around it.
Aeron makes MEMS IMUs in the Castor range.
