Dead reckoning estimates the current position from a known starting point plus measured speed, heading and elapsed time. An INS is a form of dead reckoning, often combined with a wheel odometer on land vehicles. Its error grows with distance travelled, which is why accuracy is often quoted as a percentage of distance travelled.
