A fibre optic gyroscope measures rotation from the interference of two light beams sent in opposite directions through a long coil of optical fibre (the Sagnac effect). It has no moving parts and very low drift, so it is used where the highest inertial accuracy is needed.
Aeron's Aldebaran is a FOG-based INS.
Where it is used
- High-accuracy navigation
- Artillery and naval platforms
- Long GNSS outages
