Glossary term

GNSS jamming and spoofing

Jamming is deliberate or accidental radio interference that drowns out the weak satellite signals, so a GNSS receiver loses its fix. Spoofing is the transmission of fake satellite signals so the receiver computes a wrong position or time without noticing. An inertial navigation system is immune to both because it uses no outside signal, which is why it is used to detect and ride through them.

Where it is used

  • Defence platforms
  • Critical infrastructure timing
  • UAV operations
