The challenge

Most of an army fleet is not main battle tanks. It is troop carriers, infantry combat vehicles, 4x4 and 8x8 wheeled vehicles and tracked vehicles, and every one of them needs to know where it is.

Satellite navigation alone cannot be relied on in the field. GNSS can be intermittent or compromised, and a vehicle that depends on it alone loses its position.

The fleet is large, so the answer has to be affordable enough to fit across the whole fleet, not only on a few vehicles.

How we solve it

Octantis 2 is a rugged, tactical-grade MEMS inertial navigation system, qualified for armoured vehicles. It combines its own inertial sensors with GNSS and the vehicle odometer, so the vehicle keeps its position when GNSS does not.

Holds position without GNSS
Position drift stays under 1% of distance travelled (CEP) with odometer aiding, in GNSS-compromised conditions.
Uses the vehicle odometer
Takes ground speed aiding over CAN (J1939 protocol) or from a pulse odometer with a configurable scale factor.
Close to navigation grade, priced for a fleet
Near navigation-grade position accuracy at an affordable price, for the wide fleet rather than a few vehicles.
Fits the vehicle
Isolated RS232, RS422, Ethernet and CAN interfaces for vehicle displays, controllers and computers. 12 to 32 V DC input, IP65, -40 °C to +71 °C.
Reports its own health
Continuous built-in test (CBIT) monitors system and sensor health and reports it to the user.
